Weekly Madrasah

Madrasah Az-Zahra is a weekend institution that provides comprehensive Shi’ah Ithna ‘Ashari Islamic education to students of ages 7 to 19 years. Madrasah Az-Zahra is run weekly at Imam Bargha. About 120 students are attending Madrasah Az-Zahra every Saturday from 3.30pm to 6pm. Run by a voluntary workforce of teachers and management personnel, there are 6 classes, 3 of which consist of teenage students who have attained the level of baligh or puberty. 12 voluntary teachers, each specialising in a different field such as jurisprudence, Quran, theology, etc, comprise its faculty.

While the younger students are taught the basic essentials necessary for a complete understanding of the Shi’ah Ithna ‘Ashari Islamic faith, the more senior students – those who have attained adolescence or are near the young adult stage – are given a more open, contemporary and independent syllabus to assist them in adopting and applying their beliefs and practices in the modern context of a largely secular society.

The Madrasah will occasionally organise functions to commemorate important Islamic dates such as the Martyrdom of Imam Husain a.s. and the birth anniversary of Imam Ali a.s. During these functions, the students are given the opportunity to act in plays, recite nauha or give speeches. Hence, they get to internalise their religious teachings in a lively and proactive manner. Guest speakers from overseas will also grace these functions and interact with the students from time to time.

At least once a year, the Madrasah organises a 1-day or over-the-weekend camps to offer the students a more in-depth, comprehensive and intensive educational experience. During these lively camps, the students are given the opportunity to develop and hone their leadership skills, self confidence as well as teamwork and also enhance their daily self discipline.
